Facilities & Environmental Services Technician (Entry-Level / Handy Specialist)

About the Role

At Sugarbug Dental and Orthodontics, we create positive, fun, and safe dental experiences for kids and families! We are looking for a dependable, hands-on Facilities & Environmental Services Technician to keep our pediatric practice sparkling clean, safe, and fully functional.

This is a great entry-level role for someone who has a strong work ethic, takes pride in keeping a space spotless, and possesses basic "handyman/handywoman" skills for quick office fixes. You’ll split your time between daily janitorial duties and light facility repairs, serving as our go-to person for keeping our kid-friendly environment bright and welcoming.

Schedule

• Standard Shift: Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM–7:00 PM, with a 1-hour unpaid meal break (duty-free, taken before the end of the 5th hour).

• Flexibility: Occasional schedule adjustments (e.g., an early start to meet an HVAC or dental equipment technician) will be scheduled in advance where possible.

• Overtime: Hours beyond 8 in a day or 40 in a week are paid at applicable California overtime rates.

Core Responsibilities

Janitorial & Environmental Care (Approx. 80%)

• Daily & Ongoing: Check and refresh customer/patient restrooms throughout the day; wipe down high-touch surfaces in waiting areas, game spaces, and reception; sweep/mop spills immediately using wet-floor safety signage; continuously restock soap, paper goods, and sanitizing supplies.

• Closing Duties: Complete the end-of-day closing checklist—sweep, mop, and vacuum all office and treatment room floors; empty trash/recycling; clean breakrooms and restrooms; wipe down walls, glass partitions, and doors; secure the building and set the alarm.

• Deep Cleaning Tasks: Dust high vents, light fixtures, and ceiling fans; clean windows; execute rotating weekly/monthly deep-cleaning routines.

• Clinical Boundary: Note: Cleaning in treatment areas is strictly limited to floors, walls, trash removal, and basic upkeep. Sterilization and clinical surface turnover are performed solely by trained dental assistants.

• Waste Handling: Safely transport general trash and recyclable materials. Regulated medical waste and sharps are handled strictly by certified clinical personnel.

• Keep clean inventory logs and notify management before supplies run low.

Light Maintenance & General Handyman Upkeep (Approx. 20%)

• Minor Repairs: Tackle basic fixes around the office—patching and touch-up painting on drywall, tightening loose cabinet hinges/furniture, re-hanging wall decor, and fixing minor plumbing issues (unclogging sinks/toilets, replacing faucet aerators).

• Lighting & Fixtures: Replace light bulbs, test emergency exit signs, and conduct monthly checks on smoke detectors (logging all tests).

• Vendor Escort & Support: Serve as the friendly on-site point of contact to welcome and guide external service technicians (HVAC, specialized dental equipment, pest control, IT).

• Assist with minor furniture rearrangements, package unboxing, or seasonal decor setup.

Qualifications

• Experience: 6 months to 2 years of experience in janitorial work, commercial cleaning, light building maintenance, or general handyman work. (Entry-level applicants with strong mechanical aptitude and DIY repair experience are encouraged to apply!)

• Handy Skillset: Comfortable using basic hand and power tools (drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, paint brushes, tape measures) and safely operating step ladders.

• Kid-Friendly & Professional: Warm, polite, and comfortable working around young children and parents. Able to maintain patient privacy (HIPAA discretion) at all times.

• Communication: Able to read and follow written cleaning checklists, safety warning labels, and basic maintenance logs in English. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a strong plus!

• Preferred (Not Required): Prior experience in a dental, medical, or school environment, or basic familiarization with OSHA chemical safety standards.

• Provided Upon Hire: Full Cal/OSHA hazard communication (SDS) and safety protocol training.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and climb ladders for extended periods.

• Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs (e.g., trash bags, paint buckets, supply boxes).

• Ability to work safely with standard commercial cleaning chemicals using provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Compensation & Benefits

• Pay Range: $18.00 – $24.00 per hour (commensurate with entry-level experience and specific repair skills).
